Description

Ca' Foscari University Foundation is the lead partner of BAUHALPS, an Interreg Alpine Space project dedicated to sustainability and the green transformation of the construction sector in the Alpine area, launched in September 2024 and to be implemented over the next three years.

According to the European Commission, residential areas are responsible for at least 40% of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. For the Alps, the crucial challenge is to use local resources effectively, while ensuring the consistent application of European standards and encouraging the adoption of common standards throughout the construction value chain. We usually see sustainability measured and translated into standards and indicators. But how can we transform these cold impact measurement practices into processes that incorporate the principles of beauty and togetherness of the New European Bauhaus?

BAUHALPS addresses this challenge by developing and testing a model that combines the concepts of the New European Bauhaus with sustainability measures and indicators in an innovative way. Bauhalps considers not only technological advances, but above all takes into account the vernacular tradition and the “genius loci” of the area, i.e. the set of materials, techniques and construction skills specific to a territory. The project involves the development of a toolkit that includes qualitative and quantitative measurements developed organically, involving not only the construction supply chain but also artistic and creative skills. This toolkit will be adopted by pilot projects throughout the cooperation area.

Two research centres of the Ca' Foscari University Foundation are involved in the project: the AIKU - Art Industry Culture centre and the C4S - Centre for Sustainability. The transnational partnership involves highly specialised entities in the fields of sustainability, construction, architecture and design in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France and Slovenia, with the collaboration of partners CIRIDD - International Centre Of Resources And Innovation For The Sustainable Development, Habitech - The Energy and Environment District, Innovation Salzburg, Digital Findet Stadt [GER], Bayern Innovatitive, Wood Forum Allgäu [GER], Rosenheim Technical University of Applied Sciences, Cluster BUILD&CONNECT, Technology Park Ljubljana Ltd, Museum of Architecture and Design, Camera di Commercio di Padova, Lucerne University.

With the support of local communities, the project brings together sustainable, aesthetic and cultural aspects in the Alpine construction sector.
