Description

The goal of the project is the creation of fifteen Special Lectures (online and offline) funded by the Eurasia Foundation from Tokyo. The second round of Special Lectures has the general title of “Vernacularity and Women Between Asia and Europe”: the idea originated within the Korean Literature and History of Korean Language courses held by Vincenza D'Urso, full professor at Ca' Foscari University of Venice and supervisor of the project. In Korea, as well as in many other countries in East Asia and the West, the issue of literacy has been a considerable subject of research. For decades, scholars and experts have sought to define literacy in educational, cultural and sociological fields. Within the scope of the project, it will be conceived as “access to broader knowledge “and the “ability to produce more knowledge” for women. Inviting several scholars and experts in the field of “vernacularity” from both Asian and European countries, the aim is to observe how different cultures have dealt with the emergence of the vernacular, as opposed to an overlapping-often foreign-and “dominant” language. The whole cycle of lectures will provide an overall view on the ways in which different countries have reacted to the advent of vernaculars as a opportunity for women's literacy.
